Heritage Physicals

Heritage Jr./Sr. High School will be offering physicals to students participating in sports in the 2010-2011 school year. Physicals will be held on Tuesday May 25th, 2010 from 3:15 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. for current Heritage students. Physicals for students not currently enrolled at Heritage will be from 4:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on a first come first serve basis. Physicals will take place in the high school gym. The cost is $20.00. Checks need to be made out to Heritage High School.

Pages 1 and 4 on the physical form need to be filled out and signed by both parent and student before the student will be seen by a physician.

3 volunteers are needed to help with height and weight measurements and 3 or 4 nurses are also needed to help with blood pressure. Heritage will waive the $20.00 fee for your willingness to volunteer. To sign up for volunteer time, call Cindy Meyer at 446-0140 ext. 7044.

 

GQE Retest Information

Spring GQE ISTEP scores were distributed to juniors and seniors Thursday, May 13.  Passing ISTEP GQE score for English/Language is 551.  Passing score for Math is 586.  If your junior still needs to pass one or both sections of the test, there will be two more opportunities next year to take the test.  If both sections are not passed, we will consider eligibility for a waiver. 

Eligibility includes:
Good attendance, especially in senior year (this includes tardies)
C average
Good behavior (NO ISS/OSS in senior year)
Earn Work Ethic Certification in senior year
Complete the ASVAB

SSACI Update:  Please encourage your students to visit www.ssaci.in.gov/estudent to check the status of their FAFSA for state aid purposes.  They will see a red stop sign if there are any issues preventing them from receiving state aid.  They can click the text next to the stop sign to learn how to correct these issues (if correctable).  Students with a green go sign have no current issues with their FAFSA.  They should periodically check this site between now and May 15th to insure there are no issues that will prevent them from receiving state aid.  Grant award notifications will be posted to www.ssaci.in.gov/estudent in June.  
Scholarship Information:                

Seniors - should apply early to their chosen college.  Some scholarships are awarded through your application and have specific cut-off dates.  Check with your chosen college or their web site for specific details.

The Chelsea Kay Hart Scholarship Fund has been established in Chelsea’s memory.  To apply for the $1,000 scholarship (to a college of your choice), write an essay explaining what her life lessons mean to you.  A copy of the criteria is available in Guidance. The deadline is May 24.

Zinch is offering the Easy as PI scholarship to all high school students. Zinch is about being more than test scores, so here is your chance to shine and win a little bit of money for college. The Allen County Fair and 4H are sponsoring the Miss Allen County Queen Pageant. Young Ladies who live in or go school in Allen County are eligible to compete for $1,000 in scholarship money, as well as other prizes.  Winners of the Miss Allen County Pageant go on to compete at the mill Indiana Sate Fair pageant. ** Starting with the class of 2011, Indiana University will require 7 credits of math including Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II AND one credit of Pre-Calc, AP Calc or college math which must be taken in the senior year. 

** Beginning with students who apply for 2011 enrollment, Purdue will require 8 semesters of college-preparatory math. College-prep math includes algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, analysis, etc., (but not computer, general or business math).

21st Century Scholars - is now accepting enrollment applications for 6th, 7th & 8th grade students who meet the requirements. Students must enroll by the end of their 8th grade year to be eligible.  Enrollment applications can be completed online at www.in.gov/ssaci.

SAT and ACT fee waivers are available in the Guidance Office.  Juniors and seniors may qualify for a waiver if they receive free/reduced lunch, are a 21st Century Scholar or are in foster placement. 

Franklin College offers residual ACT testing on campus for those students who have applied to FC and have strong GPA’s but may struggle with standardized testing.  The test is free of charge and the score is only accepted at FC.  If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact Jenni Fry at 317-738-8068 or jfry@franklincollebe.edu.

The Young Adults’ Services of the Allen County Public Library offers one-on-one homework help provided by knowledgeable volunteers for students in grades 6-12, Monday through Wednesday, 6:00–8:00 pm. 421-1255 or www.acplteens.wordpress.com.

A “Don Day” is a great option to visit IPFW.  Tour Student Housing, meet with an admissions counselor, take a student-led campus tour, and meet with faculty and staff in your academic area of interest.  Each IPFW School and College meets with students on different days of the week.  Students may schedule a visit online or call 481-6812. Two weeks notice is required.

St. Augustine School of Medical Assistants is offering a Medical Assistant Program online.  You can register at www.medassistant.org or call 1-888-482-8941.  Tuition is reduced to $645 until 5-10-10 (Regularly $1215).

The US Army would like to inform students and parents of afree, web-based program that makes high quality test preparation instruction available.   March2Success was designed by Peterson’s and Educational Options Inc., and is sponsored by the US Army as a public service.  There is no obligation, and personal information is not collected except from those who request to be contacted. Ball State University, Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities is offering Summer Adventure Programs for high ability students going into grades 3-12.  They offer day camps, residential camps, and tutoring.  For more information please visit:  www.bsu.edu/academy/summercamps.

Purdue Universityis offering their 30th year of Gifted & Talented (GERI) Summer Camps.  A variety of activities are available for different grade levels.  Details at:  www.purdue.edu/geri .  Applications must be postmarked by May 21, or will incur a late fee.

The American Cancer Society, Great lakes Div., Inc. offers Camp Catch-A-Rainbow for children 7-15 years old who are being treated for cancer or who are in remission from cancer.  It is held at the YMCA Storer Camps near Jackson, MI.  To receive a registration packet, download the application at:  www.cancer.org/camprainbow .  You may also call 800-723-0360 if you have questions. The registration deadline is May 28.

Community Action of Northeast Indiana (CANI) has developed a program, What CANI Earn?, for students with household incomes at 200% or below the national poverty guidelines. Youth individual development accounts (YIDA) will be open this summer for eligible student.  For every dollar a saved in the account, CANI matches it (up to $100).  The program can help students save for college, but will also teach them financial literacy skills and saving habits.  The application is available in Guidance.  The deadline is May 28.

IPFW is offering a Summer Youth Program: Life After High School.  This year’s focus will be Genealogy, “Dig Up Your Family Roots: Telling Your Family’s Story”, and will provide a fun summer activity, guidance on opportunities after high school and an introduction to college life; as well as field trips, preparation for ISTEP and SAT, and researching family history.   This FREE program is open to 30 high school students, with priority given to those who are 21st Century Scholar or participate in free and/or reduced-price lunch programs.  The program includes materials, Citilink transportation, lunch, t-shirt and a book bag. Indiana Tech’s Center for Criminal Science has created a 3 day Crime Scene Camp to give students ages 15-18 a hands-on experience in what it’s like to investigate a crime scene.  Students will learn to process a crime scene while having fun.  Crime Scene Camp will be held June 14-16, 9am – 5pm.  Prizes will be awarded, participants receive a t-shirt and certificated of completion, and lunch is included each day. Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores are holding a 2010 Own Your Look Prom Contest. Talented students are encouraged to create their own prom outfits to win cash prizes. The chosen winning entries will be based on workmanship, level of detail and originality. The lucky Grand Prize winner will receive $50,000 cash for college and a $1,000 Jo-Ann Gift Card. The Indiana Sheriffs’ Assn. will again be sponsoring two sessions of the Sheriffs Youth Leadership Camp this summer.  This camp will appeal to boys and girls who are currently in the 7th or 8th grades of school, and are interested in learning more about possible careers in law .enforcement.  Sessions will be held July 6-8, at Pine Creek Camp in Pine Village, IN, and at Waycross Episcopal Camp in Morgantown, IN.  Applications are available in Guidance, or by contacting a Sheriff.  Applications must be received by June 25.

The Indiana Troopers Assn. announces the 40th Anniversary of the Indiana State Police Summer Youth Camps.  Three levels of camps are available for students in grades 5 – 12, with dates in July.  The brochure and application are available in Guidance.  The application and fee must be received 10 days before the camp starts.

The Live Poets Society of New Jersey holds a yearly poetry contest.  All US high school students may enter up until May 31st of their senior year.  Poems must 20 lines or less, unpublished, the sole work of the entrant, and may not be entered in any other concurrent contest.  Only ONE poem per poet may be entered in each contest.  Prizes are $150 - $1,000.  The deadlines are: September 30 (December issue), and December 31 (March issue).  Their website is: www.highschoolpoetrycontest.com/ .

Junior Parents:  College-bound student-athletes who will be participating in college athletics need to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at:  www.ncaaclearinghouse.net .   Early registration helps student athletes avoid pitfalls that could delay their academic or amateur certification.
